It is summer time for a lot of you. Time for relaxing, playing and going on vacations, right? But I bet a lot of you have some professional reading that you would like to do that you just can't get to during the school year.
This summer I have several books on my reading list. I think I have an addiction to professional books! Some of these I had started before and some are brand new.
When Readers Struggle is one big book! But it is totally packed with great, practical ideas for helping struggling readers. I have read most of this book, tabbed it, used it and I want to read over it again!
I had the privilege of hearing Jan Richardson speak a couple of years ago and promptly bought her book. She has a lot of ideas for helping students be successful readers. Freebie-licous will be having a book study on this book this summer and that prompted me to bring it back out and read it again.
This is a good book for kindergarten teachers. I was able to use some of the ideas in my class. It has a lot of ideas for the classroom teacher. I like that the author teaches sounds to associate to the letters to help students learn those letters.
My next two books on my list were recommended to me by my friend, Tammy over at Forever in First. She knows me well and what I would like to read! If you don't know her blog, you are missing out. So head on over to visit!
Smarter Charts is a book that came across my radar earlier in the year. I have always thought that students don't read or use a lot of the charts that are created and hung in our classrooms. This book is supposed to teach how we can co-create charts with our students so they are using them and not just becoming decoration on our walls. I am excited about this!
My last pick is another Tammy recommendation. Comprehension Connections is about taking abstract concepts like inferring and determining importance and making them more concrete. Thanks Tammy for the great book ideas!

I already had the Guided Reading book in my shopping cart at Amazon. I plan to read it, but I was super glad to see you recommend When Readers Struggle. My principal has decided to "pilot" teaming on my first grade team. She has asked me to teach Reading, Writing, Phonics, etc... while my coworker will teach Math and Science for our two classes. The rest of our First Grade team will stay self-contained. This looks like a great read for me this summer! Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteWhen Readers Struggle is one of my "go to" resources. The other book I can't live without is The Next Step in Guided Reading.

Smarter Charts is going on my list to purchase. I'm also working my way though Debbie Diller's books about literacy centers. I bought the math center one last year.

I love your list of books. I bought Smarter Charts this year and have not quite finished it yet. But they also have a blog and it is fantastic!! Lots of pictures of charts. And Comprehension Connections is one of the best books that I have read. Lots of great ideas to use.
